Problem

Van-life travelers and digital nomads live on the road, moving through remote and sparsely populated regions, often alone. Existing platforms (social media, maps) lack trusted onboarding, route-based matching, and safety-first interaction design.

Solution

Convoy is an invite-only safety and networking platform built specifically for van-life travelers. It is not a generic social platform but a convoy intelligence system combining trust-based onboarding, real-time location intelligence, destination-aware matching, and subscription-powered safety tools.

Core Innovations

1. Invite-Only Trust Network

Convoy grows through progressive invitations. Verified users invite others, who receive limited invite capacity. This creates a trusted ecosystem and reduces spam/bots.

2. Real-Time Vector Matching

Users set a travel "Vector". Convoy detects when two users are traveling toward the same place or have overlapping routes. These users are surfaced in a ROUTE filter to enable safer group travel.

3. Privacy-First Location Intelligence

Unlike traditional apps, Convoy offers Incognito mode (fully hidden), location masking, and name anonymization. Users choose when and how they are discoverable.

4. Vibe Zone - Lightweight Interaction

A swipe-based discovery layer (Skip, Like, Message) enables frictionless interaction without overexposure. Only active participants appear.

5. Convoy Pro (Monetized Safety Layer)

RevenueCat powers subscription tiers. Pro unlocks unlimited messaging, verified builder access, priority route matching, and advanced coordination tools. Subscription is positioned as enhanced safety intelligence.

Technical Approach

  • Stack: Next.js 16+, React 19, Firebase Auth, Firestore, Firebase Admin SDK, RevenueCat Web SDK, Google Maps.
  • Security: Server-side invite validation and subscription syncing, strict Firestore field whitelisting, default deny database rules.

Impact

Convoy transforms nomadic travel from isolated movement into coordinated, trust-based mobility. It reduces solo travel risk and random unsafe encounters while increasing community trust and real-time coordination.
